Since 1986, the SEC’s official conference champion is the regular-season winner; the SEC Tournament crowns a separate champion.

How the SEC recognizes champions

From 1980–85, the SEC’s official champion was the tournament winner. Since 1986, the SEC awards the official league title to the regular-season winner(s); the tournament crowns a separate champion.
